Commanding Officer
Captain Matthew W. Tuohy

Born and raised in Brooklyn, New York, Captain Matthew W. Tuohy attended Jacksonville University as a member of its first NROTC class. He graduated in 1975 with a Bachelor of Science degree and was commissioned as an Ensign. He immediately entered flight training and was designated a Naval Flight Officer in December 1976.

Upon completion of S3A Viking training, CAPT Tuohy reported to Air Antisubmarine Squadron Thirty-Two (VS 32), at NAS Cecil Field, Florida in August of 1977. He deployed twice on board USS JOHN F. KENNEDY (CV 67).

After three years at the Air Antisubmarine Support Unit (VSSU), NAS Cecil Field, CAPT Tuohy was assigned to the USS DWIGHT D. EISENHOWER (CVN 69) in December 1983. He served as the Catapult and Arresting Gear Officer and then Assistant Air Officer.

Following a year at the Naval War College and refresher training at VS-27, CAPT Tuohy reported to VS-28 as Maintenance Officer in May 1987. Here he deployed on board USS FORRESTAL (CV 59).

In April 1989, CAPT Tuohy completed S3B transition while serving as the Executive Officer of VS-27. He returned to VS-32 as XO in 1990 and participated in combat operations in support of Operation Desert Storm on board USS AMERICA (CV 66). CAPT Tuohy assumed command of the "Maulers" in November 1991.

He returned to the USS JOHN F. KENNEDY (CV 67) and served as Executive Officer from April 1994 to April 1996, completing the final overhaul in the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard, and homeport change to Naval Station Mayport, Florida.

In July of 1996, CAPT Tuohy assumed command of USS INCHON (MCS 12) and completed the work ups and first deployment as the Navy's only Mine Countermeasures Command and Control Ship.

CAPT Tuohy joined the Forward Deployed Naval Forces from January 1999 to May 2000 where he served as the 28th Commanding Officer of USS KITTY HAWK (CV 63), homeported in Yokosuka, Japan. Here, he completed the Kitty Hawk Battlegroup's 1999, "No notice" Arabian Gulf deployment.

In June 2000, CAPT Tuohy assumed duties on the Joint Staff in Washington D.C. as the Assistant Deputy Director for Operations (Information Operations). He retired from active duty in October 2001.

A graduate of the College of Naval Command and Staff and the Armed Forces Staff College, he holds Masters degrees from Salve Regina University and The Naval War College. His awards include the Defense Superior Service Medal, two Legions of Merit, two Meritorious Service Medals, Strike/Flight Air Medal, Six Navy Commendation Medals, and various other personal and service related awards. Additionally, CAPT Tuohy was selected as the 2000 recipient of Jacksonville University's Distinguished Alumni Award.
